Title

A racial reckoning

Description

A sentinel of Mt. Wollaston Cemetery, this elk has stood proudly since 1930. The history of the BPOE (Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks), however, has racist roots grounded in the exclusion of many—until 1973, membership was limited to white men.

In aggression, elk hold their heads high, often staring directly at their opponent.

Black lives matter. Look at our nation's past—our neighborhoods' past—and we can move forward together.
